Twilight of the Predator

February 1, 2009

Currently In Development

Man-eating predators have long been fodder for Hollywood nightmares—all fang and claw, fearsome and cunning. Films like Jaws are part of a cultural ritual. We sit in the dark to experience the thrill of being hunted, the tingle of a primordial fear, a hint of our ancient and complex relationship with predators. But when the lights come back on, we’re safe again. The predators are gone, and good riddance, too. We name our sports team after these powerful animals, as if to harness their ferocious spirit, but destroy the habitat they depend upon. We simultaneously worship and revile, persecute and protect them. Yet now more than ever we sit at a crossroads, where the very existence of large, dangerous predators is threatened.

This film will ask what it means to contemplate a world without predators. What void will they leave in our ecosystems? What will their absence cost to our cultures? How will we change if these animals that shaped our evolution vanish? And ultimately, how are our fates tied to theirs?
